Claire Billingsley Art and Ceramics
I am a ceramicist and artist and I live in Ledbury in rural Herefordshire. I work in stoneware clay using hand–building techniques predominately coiling, slabbing and press moulding. I create work that is both functional and sculptural and because my work is made in stoneware clay and fired to a high temperature, it can happily live in or outdoors.
Form and colour dominates my work which is inspired by nature and my love of art history. My work is bold and striking and I am constantly striving for excellence and precision in my creations.
My love of ceramics makes it my preferred media and I studied it to degree level in the 1990’s at Cardiff. However my years of teaching have honed my artistic skills in a variety of other media including drawing, painting, sculpture and printing.
I taught full time for nineteen years from 1997 at secondary level in Gloucester following two residences as an Artist in a girl’s school in North Wales and a boy’s school in Berkshire. I continue to enjoy teaching on a smaller scale and host regular workshops in my studio for individual sessions or for small groups. In addition I occasionally teach at other venues, tailoring my courses in both two and three-dimensional media. In addition I work on commissions and collaborations and my work is exhibited in galleries, fairs, open studios and markets. I am constantly extending my repertoire in clay which ignites my imagination and feeds my soul.
